How can I get involved?
Thank you for your interest in being a part of Melbourne Activist Legal Support (MALS). There are many ways you can contribute to our work, knowing you are helping to provide critical support to those standing up for social and environmental justice.
Here are some ideas...
Join one of our Working Groups
Dependent on your experience, capacity, and interest, we have a number of working groups you could get involved in:
Writing, Research and Resources Working Group
This groups meets on the first Tuesday of each month (usually online) and plans legal research and writing up of articles, blog posts, activist legal resources, guides or education materials. Tasks are divided according to interest and its a great way to resource social movements in relevant, useful and up to date legal rights information.
Fundraising Working Group
This groups meets online and plans and organises annual funding drives, special fundraisers, seeks out and applies for grants and generally keeps MALS going!
If you have skills and interest in running events, seeking grants or building relationships with donors please get in touch.
Legal Observer Working Group
This is a group looking at the theory, practice and operations of our legal observer teams. We discuss and plan how we can improve our impact, our training, and look after volunteer legal observers. We also work with a network of legal observer groups around Australia and we learn from teams around the world. This is a good group to join once you have done the Legal Observer Training and observed a couple of times.
If any of these tickle your interest of passion, please get in contact.
Become a Legal Observer
MALS maintains an active network of Legal Observer volunteers that may be called upon to observe protest actions as part of a team. If you would like to become a Legal Observer with MALS, you’ll need to complete one of our introductory training events, and attend at least two shifts doing practical Legal Observing before being able to be act as Legal Observer. If you’d like to get involved and sign-up for training, please let us know by completing our Expression of Interest form, or join our mailing-list to get notified of upcoming training events and workshops.
Once you are trained and have observed at least two protest events you may be interested in becoming a Team Coordinator to help put together and field teams.
Become a Regular Donor
Activist legal support makes movements stronger. Becoming a monthly donor supports us in our work training and coordinating more Legal Observers at more protests.
You can support MALS now with a small regular donation!
