Legal Observer Training

Join MALS at our next Legal Observer training on Sunday 9 October 2022!
Legal observers document breaches of human rights, arrests, use of force incidents and report upon policing and police behaviour.
Melbourne Activist Legal Support (MALS)  fields independent Legal Observer Teams to monitor police and policing  at a wide range of protests, actions, and events throughout Victoria.
Our practical training workshops are taken by experienced trainers and cover:
  • area coverage and observation skills
  • human rights, police powers and the limitations on police use of force in Victoria
  • assessing and monitoring police operational tactics during protests
  • documenting, gathering evidence and reporting on abuses of police power
  • Legal observer safety and team protocols.

Legal observing is suitable for all persons and abilities. You do not have to be a lawyer or legally trained.

The monitoring of policing is equally critical in a wide range of contexts; racialised and discriminatory policing of communities, the policing of dance festivals or night clubs, policing operations targeting particular communities. The practice principles and advice in this training are entirely relevant and applicable to legal observing in a wide variety of contexts.

To become a legal observer for MALS you are required to attend one Training Session and then volunteer for two practical trainings in the field (as part of MALS roster for upcoming Legal Observer teams).

MALS acknowledges it works on the unceded lands of the great Kulin Nations and pays respect to Country and to Elders past and present. We acknowledge the centuries of Aboriginal struggle against dispossession and genocide and that the Australian police and legal system have been and continue to be a primary component of the colonial project in this country.
